This painting is of a mansion on a hill on MD Rte 424, on the left as one drives towards Davidsonville (and Homestead Gardens). It was painted in the front seat of my Toyota Highlander in January, with a smock thrown over the steering wheel and the heat on so my paints did not freeze.
The JHUAPL annual Art Show, hosted by the APL Women's Club raises money for the Johns Hopkins University Children's Fund.

Sidewalk Surprise
14x19 inches, acrylic on canvas panel This painting has a great story. While painting the majority of this composition, a car was parked in front of the house. It was only after I was about 70% done that I discovered a tiny hot pink flower was growing between the bricks. So that is not a convenient bit of "gratuitous pink"—it was really there! The creation of this painting became a bit of a neighborhood affair. Neighbors would stop by to check on my progress, and one brought a traffic cone to place in front of me so a car wouldn't park right there (I was in a low beach chair). The neighbors kept the owners of the house (out of town) appraised of my progress and the owners sent one of the neighbors to the Art On The Avenue subcontest to purchase the painting, which happened to be not quite finished at the time. Regardless, it took 3rd place, and it was great fun to text the owners that I'd be happy to hold on to their now award-winning painting until they were back in town. The initial draw to pursue this painting was the repeated star motif in the windows, the ironwork, and front wall, the dappling of light on the front wall, and the cut glass on the door, with its wreath. Well, I became so engrossed in all the rest that I didn't get to the architectural stars above the windows. I added those in after the fact for the owners. I hand-delivered the painting in September, and it was immediately placed on the right wall of the foyer, to be seen as one enters the house. What an honor!

Summit (E. Atlantic Dune Crossing, Fenwick Island, DE)

Each year, my extended family takes over a section of beach at Fenwick Island, DE, for a week. I always take a photo from the top of the dune on the first and last day. This view is facing the bay side (with the ocean side at my back).
This painting was an experiment in using taping techniques I learned from Matt Barber Kennedy in a Paint Annapolis (Maryland Federation of Art, Annapolis, MD) workshop. However, it turns out that this technique doesn't transfer over to paper so well (he uses gessoed panels). Regardless, in this case, things still worked out.
